Kissing Friday /

Kissing Friday is an old British tradition that is not considered acceptable behaviour today. This tradition allowed boys to kiss girls without any repercussions. The origins of this tradition are not known but some say that it is because Friday is named after the goddess Venus. Others think that it is linked to Judas's kiss of betrayal.

Although the tradition has died out, some old people remember the tradition with fondness. In 1990, a newspaper in Leicester reported that a local old lady complained that men and boys "don't seem very keen this year".

Kissing Friday occurred on the first Friday after Ash Wednesday. It was celebrated predominately in the Victorian (1837 - 1901) and Edwardian (1901 - 1910) eras but continued until the beginnings of World War 2 (1939). Boys could kiss girls without being critisized or slapped. However, before boys could kiss the girls they had to catch them first. This resulted in chaos in schools as boys chased girls round the school playground. In addition, this tradition supposedly only lasted until midday.

It should be pointed out that to some young boys the idea of kissing girls was not at all appealing. Also not all girl objected to to being kissed.

In Yorkshire (North East England), girls were allowed to leave school early. Nevertheless, some boys had a cunning plan to ensure they got a kiss. THey would tie a piece of rope across the road and if a girl wanted to pass then they would have to pay a toll in the form of a kiss.

In the Midlands and some parts of the North of England this custom was known as 'Nippy Hug Day' and some adult men also joined in. ('Nippy' is a reference to the verb 'to nip' or 'to pinch'.) In the town of Sileby, Leicestershire, boys were allowed to pinch the girl's bottom if the girl resisted. This was known as 'lousing', a reference to the removal of headlice. In some areas of Cumbria, there was a similar tradition called 'Nippy Lug Day' where children of both sexes were allowed to pinch each others ears with out reproach for the whole day. ('Lug' is an abbreviation of the slang word 'lughole', meaning ear.)

(“Nippy”指的是动词“to nip”或“to pinch”。)
