Bonfire Night / 篝火之夜



Bonfire Night on November 5th is a famous annual event in the U.K.
11 月 5 号的篝火之夜是英国著名的年度活动。
It is also known as Guy Fawkes Night.
它也被称为盖伊福克斯之夜。
It celebrates the failure of an attempt in 1605 by 12 Catholics to kill the British Protestant king, James I, in the Houses of Parliament.
它庆祝 1605 年 12 名天主教徒在议会大厦杀死英国新教徒国王詹姆斯一世的企图失败。
Guy Fawkes was one of these Catholics and he placed barrels of gun powder in the cellars underneath the Houses of Parliament with the intention of blowing up the king and parliament.

However, the plot was discovered before Guy Fawkes could ignite the gunpowder.

All the members of the plot were arrested, tortured, and then executed in public.

Since that time, the British people have celebrated this event by lighting bonfires and having firework displays.

In addition, some children collect money to buy sweets by making an effigy of Guy Fawkes and displaying it on the streets

This tradition is called ‘Penny for the Guy’.

The ‘Guy’ is made from old clothes stuffed with hay or crumpled newspaper.

Afterwards, the effigy is usually burnt on a bonfire.

Some people buy fireworks and have a firework display in their garden.

In the past, these things would have been cooked on the bonfire but nowadays they are usually cooked in the kitchen.
