The Davy Lamp is a safety lamp used in flammable atmospheres, such as coal mines.

It was invented by the British engineer Humphry David in 1815.

The Davy lamp consists wick lamp with the flame enclosed a fine mesh screen.

This lamp reduced the danger of explosions in mines due to the presence of methane.

The presence of methane was a constant danger in coal mines all over the world.

In the U.K., for example, there had been an explosion in 1835 in which 103 miners had died and in another incident in 1821, 52 miners had died.

Humphry Davy was not the only person to address this problem.

George Stephenson, another British engineer who is known as the ‘Father of Railways’, also invented a similar lamp despite having no scientific understanding of the problem.

One month before Davy’s demonstration of his lamp to the scientific community, George Stephenson successfully demonstrated his lamp to two witnesses down a coal mine.

The difference between the two lamps was that Stevenson’s lamp used a perforated plate to allow air into the lamp  whereas Davy’s lamp used wire-sieve around the flame.

Both lamps allowed air into the lamp but prevented the flame moving outside the lamp and reacting with the methane in the air thus causing an explosion.

Davy initially received all the credit for his invention.

He was given a medal and £2000 worth of silver.

Later, a government committee decided that both engineers had independently invented a viable safety lamp.

George Stephenson was then awarded £1000 for his invention.

Humphry Davy refused to accept this decision.

For the rest of his life he claimed that George Stephenson had stolen his idea.

The Davy lamp became the most popular safety lamp used in mines across the world.

Despite the lamp’s popularity, it still had problems.

The wire screen could be easily damaged and the wire screen blocked a lot of the light.

Some stupid miners continued to use candles alongside the safety lamp in order to have more light.

Although Humphry Davy could have made a lot of money from his invention, he refused to patent the lamp, meaning that manufactures could produce the lamp without paying a license fee.

The Davy lamp was used for many years in coal mines.

However, it became redundant when new regulations on mine ventilation came into effect.
