The British Isles consists of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland plus over 6000 smaller islands.

The United Kingdom (U.K.) was formed in 1707 from the combined countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island. The Republic of Ireland (the southern part of Ireland) became an independent country 1921.
