April Fool’s Day is a special day in the UK

It is celebrated every year on the 1st. April.

It is a day when British people play pranks on each other.

In England, you are only allowed to play these pranks in the morning.

In Scotland, however, April Fool’s Day actually lasts 2 whole days.

Nowadays, it is not only the British that celebrate April Fool’s Day.

Many other countries also celebrate April Fools Day.

This special day goes back to ancient times.

In the U.K., the first written record of April Fool’s Day is mention in the 14th century.

Typical pranks include misleading signs, replacing food ingredients with something unexpected e.g. cream replaced by toothpaste, and placing scary objects where people will find them.

In modern times, the pranks have become much more diverse.

The most famous prank in the U.K. was perpetrated by the BBC in 1957.

At this time, very few British people had eaten noodles or knew how noodles were made.

Another famous April Fools Day prank broadcast by the BBC showed men collecting people’s ‘unused’ water from their dripping taps to return it to reservoir.

Unfortunately, sometimes real events that occur on the 1st April are thought to be a prank.
