In 55 BC and 54 BC the Roman general Julia Caesar attempted to invade Great Britain. The invasion failed because attacks by local tribes and bad weather. However, in 43 AD, the Romans tried again with more troops. This time they were successful and consequently this invasion resulted in the Romans controlling Great Britain for almost 400 years. In some parts of the country, the Romans were met with continued opposition, such as the revolt led by Queen Boudicia in the South East of England. The Romans had to build their own ‘Great Wall’ in order to prevent attacks from the Celts in Scotland. In other more peaceful parts of the country however the Romans were able to build cities, roads and forts. Despite the Roman’s superior technology and organisational skill, they were always under attack. Eventually the Romans conceded defeat and returned back to Italy.
