TThe Early Medieval Period (410 AD – 1066 AD)

This period covers time between the end of Roman rule and the French invasion of Great Britain. This was a period of conflict and division. Within Great Britain, different tribes fought amongst themselves and was constantly attacked by tribes from Scandinavia and Europe. For a period of time, England was even under the control of the Danish King. Because of these events, this period of history is referred to as the ‘Dark Ages’. Nevertheless, during this period a new ‘English’ identity started to emerge.
