The Stuart era began when James I, king of Scotland succeeded Elizabeth I, queen of England, to become king of both Scotland, England and Ireland. The Stuart period was a period of intense political and religious debate. There was intense conflict between catholics and protestants, and between the monarchy and parliament. It was also a time of significant scientific discoveries and cultural expression. This was the time of Shakespeare and Christopher Wren.

The disputes came to a head when Parliament tried to limit the power of the king. The king tried to ignore Parliament and this led to the English Civil War. At the end of this war the king, Charles I, was defeated and executed.

The country was then controlled by Oliver Cromwell, a leader in the strict protestant group called the Puritans. However the Puritan’s control of the country was lost when Cromwell died 9 years later and Charle’s I son, Charles II, was restore to the throne of England.

During the Stuart period, two other major events occurred in London; the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London. These two events killed many people and destroyed much of the city. The rebuilding of London created many of the fine buildings, such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, that can be seen today.
