Scott of the Antarctic
南极的斯科特

Robert Falcon Scott is a famous British explorer.

罗伯特·法尔肯·斯科特 是著名的英国探险家。


Initially, he served in the British Navy for many years.

最初,他在英国海军服役多年。


However, in 1901 the Royal Geographical Society asked him to lead an expedition to the Antarctic.

然而,在 1901 年,皇家地理学会邀请他带领一支南极探险队。


This expedition, which also included another famous British explorer, Earnest Shackleton, got closer to the South Pole than anyone in the past.

这次探险还包括另一位著名的英国探险家欧内斯特·沙克尔顿 ,他比过去任何人都更接近南极。


Because of the success of this expedition, he was then determined to be the first person to reach the South Pole.

由于这次探险的成功,他决心成为第一个到达南极的人。


He spent many years raising funds to finance this expedition.

His expedition to reach the South Pole finally set off in June 1910.

他到达南极的探险终于在 1910 年 6 月出发。


The expedition suffered from appalling weather.

探险队遭受了可怕的天气。


Many of the team members, dogs and ponies had to return home because of the freezing storms.

由于寒冷的暴风雨,许多团队成员、狗和小马不得不回家。


Eventually only 5 members of the expedition remained.

最终,探险队只剩下 5 名成员。


On 17thJanuary 1912, the 5 explorers finally reached the South Pole to find that a Norwegian team had arrived there just over 1 month before them.

1912 年1 月17 日,5 名探险家终于到达南极,发现挪威团队比他们早1 个多月到达那里。


Defeated, they set off on the 1500 km return journey back home.

战败后,他们踏上了 1500 公里的返程。


During the return journey, in mid-February, one of the 5 team members, called Evans, died.

Another team member, called Oates, was suffering from severe frostbite and he knew that he was slowing the team down

The team was running out of food and heating fuel.

One evening, Mr. Oates, announced that he was going outside and that he may be outside for some time.

He got up, walked out of the tent and was never seen again.

Despite Mr. Oates sacrifice, the 3 remaining members of the team died of starvation and freezing temperatures on 29th March 1912.

尽管奥茨先生牺牲了自己的生命,但团队的剩余 3 名成员于 1912 年3 月29 日死于饥饿和严寒。


They were found 8 months later in their tent and were only 20km from a pre-arranged supply depot.

The story of what had happened was recorded in Robert Falcon Scott’s diary which was found in the tent.

The bodies were buried where they were found and a monument made of ice and snow was built to mark the location.

尸体被埋在发现的地方,并建造了一座由冰雪制成的纪念碑来纪念该地点。


Many British people feel that this story typifies the British character.

A thirst for discovery, the willingness to accept a challenge despite the dangers and self-sacrifice for the greater good.
