The Eyemouth Disaster /

Eyemouth was a busy fishing port on the East Coast of Scotland.

In October 1881, the fishing fleet suffered a devastating disaster which has affected the town up to the present day.

The weather on the East Coast of Scotland can be particularly stormy and it was not uncommon for boats and fishermen to be lost at sea.

The government had mandated changes to fishing boats to prevent the fishing boats being swamped by large waves.

However some fishermen though the changes were dangerous and that they could be more easily swept overboard from their boats.

The fishermen of Eyemouth were some of the people who refused to modify their boats.

During the spring and summer of 1881 a series of storms had prevented the Eyemouth fishing fleet from going out to sea.

As a result many families were suffering through lack of food and money.

On Friday, 14 October 1881, the weather appeared calm and the fishing fleet decided to put out to sea, despite indications that a storm was coming.

It was a tradition in Eyemouth that if one boat sailed then the whole fishing fleet would sail.

After the fleet had left the harbour, the local authorities received a telegram warning them that a severe storm was approaching.

However, it was now too late to warn the fishermen.

The fishing fleet sailed for three hours to their fishing grounds which were over eight miles from land.

At midday, the sky suddenly darkened and the wind increased to hurricane levels.

The boats, of course, immediately stopped fishing and headed for home.

Many of the boats were swamped by huge waves.

As the remaining boats approached the harbour, people on the shore could see the plight of the fishermen.

They watched helplessly as the boats were smashed to pieces on the rocks just outside the harbour.

A total of 189 men and boys died that day. Many of them from the same families.

This disaster left 93 widows and 267 children without fathers.

Two days later a memorial service was held in Eyemouth to mourn the death of all these fishermen.

As the service was taking place, a single damaged fishing boat slowly sailed into the harbour.

All of it crew of seven fishermen were safe.

The captain of the boat had decided to face the storm and wait, rather than attempting to return to the harbour.

This disaster is known as ‘Black Friday’ by the local people.

The local parish church has been converted into a museum which tells the story of the disaster.

In additions, a memorial was built in each of the four towns where the fishermen lived.

Each of the memorials are five metres long and depict the suffering of the women and children who had lost their menfolk.
