The Voyage of the Mayflower/

The voyage of the Mayflower is a famous event in both British and American history.

In 1620, a ship called the Mayflower set sail from the U.K. to establish the first permanent British colony in America.

On board were over 100 passengers and about 50 crew.

The passengers were divided into 2 groups.

One group was members of a strict religious group called the ‘Puritans’.

The Puritans came from the U.K. and Holland and they were very unpopular with both the authorities and the general public.

Members of the other group were tradesmen and their families who were looking for a new and better life in America.

The living conditions on the Mayflower were very poor.

More than 150 people were crammed onto a ship that was less than 100m long and 24m wide.

In fact, the ship had been design for U.K. coastal journeys rather than crossing an ocean.

The Mayflower set off on its journey from Plymouth in England on 16th September 1620.

It took 2 months to cross the Atlantic.

The sea was very stormy which made many of the passengers sick.

One of passengers was even sweep overboard during a storm.

The Mayflower arrived in Cape Cod in Massachusetts on 19th November 1620.

The Mayflower expedition was not the first attempt by the British to set up a colony in the United States.

In 1607, English settlers attempted to set up a colony in the state of Virginia.

However, these settlers were unprepared for the severity of the winters on the East Coast of America.

All the settlers died from cold and starvation.

Likewise, the Mayflower passengers also found that they were ill-prepared.

Half the passengers and crew died from the cold, lack of food, and disease.

Previous settlers had brought diseases to America which were unknown to the native American Indians.

Many American Indians died from these imported diseases and so the Indians were often hostile towards settlers.

However one local Indian chief offered a truce to the settlers because he wanted their help in defeating a rival tribe.

This Indian chief amazed the settlers because he could speak English.

He showed the settlers how to grow corn and survive in this unfamiliar environment.

After the first successful harvest, the settlers invited the whole tribe to a feast.

This feast was later called ‘Thanksgiving’ and the event is celebrated each year in America on the fourth Thursday in November.

Unfortunately, the good relations between the local Indians and the settlers did not last long.

Disputes and violence increased between the Indians and settlers which eventually led to the local Indians almost being wiped out.

The voyage of the Mayflower is celebrated in both the U.K. and America as it represents the start of the creation of the modern America.
