Lorne Doone / 洛恩·杜恩

Lorne Doone is a romantic novel by Richard Doddridge Blackmore and was first published in 1869. It is about a group of historical characters who live around the desolate moors of Exmoor, southwest England, in the late 17th century.

John Ridd is a respectable farmer in Exmoor. His father was murdered by the local Doone clan. The Doone family were once noblemen but are now outlaws. By chance John meets a girl called Lorne and falls hopelessly in love with her. However, little does he know that she is the granddaughter of the man who killed his father. In addition, there is another man, Carver, who is intent on marrying Lorne and inheriting the Doone families money.

When Lorne’s grandfather dies Carver become the leader of the Doone family. John helps Lorne escape from Carver family and she comes to live with John and his family on their farm.

Soon after, Carver’s father comes to visit Lorne and during this visit he takes the opportunity to steal Lorne’s necklace. This necklace was very precious to Lorne as she was told that it previously belonged to her deceased mother.

It is then revealed that this necklace actually belonged to a noblewoman called Lady Dugal, who was robbed and murdered by outlaws. Lorne consequently discovers that she is not part of the Doone family at all but the stolen daughter of Lady Dugal. This means that Lorne is in fact the heiress to a huge fortune.

When the English king, Charles II dies, the late king’s illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth, challenges the late king’s brother, James, for the English throne. Hoping to regain their ancestral lands, the Doone family side with the Duke of Monmouth.

The Duke of Monmouth is finally defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor.  Both the Duke and his supporters are then sought in order to be tried for treason. At this time John Ridd is also captured. Although innocent, he too is going to be tried for treason.

An old family friend takes John to London in an attempt to clear John’s name. John goes to see the Earl of Brandir and so is reunited with Lorne. When John foils an attack on the Earl, King James pardons John and makes him a nobleman.

However, the Doone family are still at large and their criminal activities are despised by the local Exmoor community. John, using his knowledge of the Doone family, leads an attack on them. All of the Doone family are killed except for Carver and his father who escape.

When the Earl of Brandir dies, Lorne’s new guardian allows Lorne to return to Exmoor and to marry John. However, during the ceremony, Carver and his father burst into the church and shoot Lorne.

Carver and his father then flee the scene, and John chases after them vowing revenge for the murder of his soon-to-be wife. In the pursuit, John follows Carver on to the moors. A fight between the two men ensues and Carver dies when he falls into a mire.

John returns to the church and finds that Lorne has survived. After a period of recuperation, John and Lorne are married and then go on to live a happy life together.

When published, this novel received many accolades from prominent writers of the time. Since then the book has been very popular with the British public. Although considered by many as a book for female readers, it has also been popular with many men. In fact, in 1906, this book was chosen by male students at Yale University as their favourite novel.
