The Yorkshire Giant / 约克郡巨人

William Bradley is known to be one of the tallest men that has ever lived. He is more commonly known as the ‘Yorkshire Giant’.

威廉·布拉德利被认为是有史以来最高的人之一。他更常被称为“约克郡巨人”。

William was born in Market Weighton, Yorkshire, England and lived from 1787 to 1820. He was the forth son in a family of thirteen. When he was born he weighed 6.35kg.

威廉出生于英格兰约克郡的马基特韦顿，生活在1787年至1820年。他是一个有十三个孩子家庭中的第四个儿子。他出生时体重6.35公斤。

William grew quickly. Initially other children used to tease him about his height but as he grew taller these children began to become scared of him.

His height, however, became useful at school. Teachers at school were said to ask William to lift misbehaving children onto the crossbeams under the schoolroom roof. These naughty children would be left there until the teacher asked William to take them down.

After he left school he became a farm labourer. However, this job paid him very little money. He decided to join a travelling show, calling himself ‘The Yorkshire Giant’. William now measured 1.79m in height.

At that time, travelling shows were very popular and attracted large crowds. People would pay to look at both people and animals with unusual characteristics or deformities. Exhibits in these shows could include exceptionally tall or small people, very hairy women, and people born with missing limbs.

Once his fame had become established, William decided to operate independently. He would charge each person a shilling to visit him in his room. Even the royal family wanted to meet William Bradley. When he was presented before King George III, the king presented him with a large gold watch on a chain. William was so proud of that watch that he wore it every day for the rest of his life.

William died at the age of 33 in his hometown. He was buried inside the church because it was feared that someone may rob his grave.

There is now an annual festival in Market Weighton to celebrate the life of William Bradley. It has been held in the town since 1996 and includes amusement rides, market stalls and other family attractions.
