Orchard Wassailing /

Wassailing is an ancient British tradition which continues to this day. The word 'wassail' is derived from a very old Anglo-Saxon saying which means 'be healthy' and is used to propose a toast like "Cheers!".

Wassailing ceremonies generally take place on 'Twelth Night' which is the 5th or 17th of January, depending on which calendar is used.

The purpose of wassailing is to awaken the trees and to scare away evil spirits. The wassailing orchard visit relates to the ancient custom of visiting orchards in cider-producing regions of England such as Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Herefordshire. In the orchards, participants recite incantations and sing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year.

A traditional rhyme that is sung at such events is:

Wassail the trees, that they may bear
You many a plum and many a Pear
For more or less fruit they will bring,
As you do give them Wassailing

Although wassailing ceremonies tend to differ somewhat from village to village, they have the same essential elements. A wassail king and queen sing the first notes of the songs and lead the procession from orchard to orchard. The queen will be lifted into the trees. A piece of toast dipped in cider, mulled wine or punch will be tied to the tree as a gift. Alternatively, cider is poured on the roots of the trees. The crowd then makes as much noise as possible. They sing, bang pans and drums and sometimes fire a shotgun to scare away any demons. The procession then moves to the next orchard. Needless to say, this ceremony usually involves drinking lots of cider.
