The Lady of Shalott /

The ‘Lady of Shalott’ is a famous painting by the English painter John William Waterhouse.  John William Waterhouse painted in the style of the Pre-Raphaelite painters who liked to paint romantic images with bold colours.

The ‘Lady of Shalott’ was painted in 1888. Although two other painting of the same lady were later created by John William Waterhouse, the 1888 version is the most famous. This painting has been voted as one of the top 10 most popular works of British art.

‘The Lady of Shalott’ is based on a poem of the same name written by the famous British poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. The poem is set in the time of the mythical King Arthur and tells the story of a woman who suffers from a curse. This unnamed woman lives alone in a tall tower. She is forbidden to leave the tower and can only view the outside world through the reflections in a mirror. She spends her time weaving a long tapestry of the scene she sees in the reflections of her mirror. One day she happens to see one of King Arthur’s knights, the handsome Sir Lancelot, pass by and she immediately falls in love with him. However once she looks out of the window the curse is triggered. She leaves the tower to find Sir Lancelot and slowly sails down the nearby river to the castle, called Camelot, where King Arthur and his knights live. A storm erupts and the weather becomes very cold. By the time the woman has reached Camelot, she has frozen to death.

The painting of the ‘Lady of Shalott’ is full of symbolism. The river symbolises life itself, slowly flowing toward death.  At the front of the boat are three candles and a crucifix. Candles represents life and two of the candles have been blown out, indicating that this lady’s life is almost over. The crucifix represents sacrifice and eventual redemption. The woman sits on her tapestry and it is dragging in the water. This symbolises that she has only been seeing life from a distance and not experiencing real life herself.

The ‘Lady of Shalott’ is on permanent display at the Tate Britain Art Gallery in London. It is considered a priceless work of art and the British Government will never allow it to be sold. However, if the painting were ever to come to auction, experts say that is would cost the buyer from 30 to 50 million U.S. dollars.
